Upper East Side Townhouse

New York, New York

Originally constructed in 1879, 45 E. 74th St. suffered from a series of tragic renovations in the 20th century. However, through researching old Sanbourne maps, carefully examining historic photos, and embarking on contextual studies of the neighborhood, I assisted in the design and construction management of a new single-family townhouse that speaks to the character, style, and scale of the Upper East Side historic district. In order to avoid a feeling of façadism, the new design looks to other style precedents found among Upper East Side townhouses. The new elevation reinterprets the flamboyant Queen-Anne details of the original townhouse as a more traditional neoclassical design.
